Sand filters are made up of a large tank than can be made of metal, concrete, or fiberglass. It has a thick bed of special sand within it. While being filtered the water from the pool enter the filter through the inlet pipe which is then fed to the distribution head located inside the tank. Gravity will pull the water down though the sand and that's where the tiny sand particles trap the debris and dirt.
As the sand becomes clogged over time the water moves through the filter much slower. A pressure gauge is very handy on the filter. However if you don't have a gauge you'll be able to tell when the filter is becoming clogged by the condition of your water.
With a gauge you can instantly know at a glance when you need to backwash the sand. Backwashing is a simple process. You simply run the filter in reverse and that cleans out all the debris. Then you put it back into rinse mode which repacks your sand. This generally has to be done every couple of weeks.
